It’s officially fall, and we all know what that means. Yes, football season, but more importantly (in my opinion), buffalo chicken season. This year we are taking it a step further while this healthy and delicious Whole30 Buffalo Chicken Soup!
Whole30 Buffalo Chicken Soup
Typically the colder months come with lots of gathering surrounded around food, but that doesn’t mean that food can’t be good for you while also being delicious! This Whole30 Buffalo Chicken Soup drives that point home. It’s made from real, simple ingredients that will help fuel your body while satisfying your craving for the traditional dip.
While the soup is compliant for anyone that is on the Whole30 Program (be sure to use compliant ingredients!), it is also friendly for paleo diets as well as those who don’t eat or limit their dairy. And as always on my blog, it’s completely gluten free!

Tips & Tricks
Before you dive into the recipe and try out this must-make dish, here are my tips to make this soup even easier to whip up and some explanation behind the steps!
- In order to thicken the soup without adding flour, you’ll start the recipe with just the broth, potatoes and some seasonings. You’ll then blend them together in a blender once the potatoes are fork tender. This is a great way to thicken soups without adding any flours or unusual ingredients! Not only will it help thicken the sauce, but it also provides a creamy flavor. When prepping your potatoes and onion, be sure to cut them into larger pieces/cubes instead of chopping them finely so that they are easier to blend.
- If you love spice, feel free to add additional buffalo/hot sauce to this recipe. Vice versa, if you like things more on the mild side, hold back on how much sauce you add in. You can also just make the recipe as is and add in additional coconut milk to bring the heat down slightly.
- Toppings are sometimes the most fun part about soup, wouldn’t you agree? I would definitely recommend not skipping out on them with this recipe. The bacon gives a salty and crispy touch, the green onions I feel are self-explanatory and a crunchy topping is a must, which is where celery comes in! It’s refreshing and crispy and cools down the heat from the hot sauce just enough. Just wait until you try it!

Whole30 Buffalo Chicken Soup
Equipment
- Blender
- Slow Cooker or Large Stovetop Pot/Dutch Oven
Ingredients
- 4 golden potatoes, cubed
- 2 cloves garlic
- ¼ white onion
- 4 cups chicken broth or chicken bone broth (I use Bonafide Provisions)
- ¼ cup nutritional yeast (I use Bob's Red Mill)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 2 lbs chicken breast
- 4 stalks celery
- ¼-½ cup buffalo sauce (I use The New Primal)
- ¼ cup full fat coconut milk or coconut cream
Instructions
Slow Cooker Version
- Add cubed potatoes, garlic cloves, onion, chicken broth, nutritional yeast, half of the celery, chicken, salt and pepper to a slow cooker and cook on high for 3 hours or until potatoes are fork tender and chicken is cooked through.
- Once the potatoes are fork tender and the chicken is cooked through, remove the chicken and set aside. Add the slow cooker contents to a high-powered blender and blend until completely smooth. You may need to do this in two batches.
- Shred your chicken. I do this using a hand mixer in a large bowl, but you can also use two forks.
- Add blender contents back to the slow cooker along with your shredded chicken, the remaining chopped celery.
- Stir in the buffalo/hot sauce and coconut milk/cream until completely combined.
- Serve warm with toppings of choice!
Stovetop Version
- Add chicken breasts, cubed potatoes, garlic cloves, onion, chicken broth, nutritional yeast, salt and pepper to a pot with a lid on the stove and cook on medium heat for 30 minutes or until potatoes are fork tender.
- Once the potatoes are fork tender and the chicken is cooked through, remove the chicken and place into a large bowl and allow to cool slightly.
- Add the rest of the pot contents to a high-powered blender and blend until completely smooth (you may need to do this in two batches depending on the size of your blender) then add back to the pot.
- Using a hand mixer (or two forks), shred your chicken. Once shredded, add the chicken back to the pot.
- Place the pot back on the stove over medium/low heat and add in the coconut milk/cream, chopped celery and buffalo sauce. Simmer with the lid on for 5-10 minutes.
- Give the soup a good stir to ensure everything is completely combined.
- Serve warm with toppings of choice!

Okay. This looked so good when you shared it that I made a mental note to make it some time, but when you KEPT making it I knew it was going to be amazing. Just made it tonight and wow… You’ve outdone yourself. This is freaking delicious and it will be in the regular rotation! THANK YOU!
kaylaskitchandfix
Ah, I love that, Kelsi! It’s quickly become a staple for me and I’m so excited to hear you feel the same! Thank you for making and reviewing 🙂
Paige
Healthy, delicious, and easy to make. I used an immersion blender instead of a regular blender and it worked perfectly. Will be making again!!
kaylaskitchandfix
Hi Paige! I’m so glad that your immersion blender worked well for you and that this is going to be something you’ll make again 🙂 Thank you so much!
Ashley
I literally made this the day after KKF posted it! It is ALL the hype and more. So delicious, tasty, and unexpected. Making it a weekly soup in my rotation.
kaylaskitchandfix
Hi Ashley, that makes me so happy to hear that you love it as much as I do! Thank you so much. 🙂

When I saw this on Kayla’s instagram, I thought it was an interesting concept! The other night I was craving comfort and this recipe came to mind. 5 stars for sure! Everyone raved – well done!

Alex
I loved this soup! It came out so creamy and it was simple to make. My whole family loved it! I used the slow cooker setting on the instant pot and then used an immersion blender in the pot.
kaylaskitchandfix
Thank you so much for sharing! I don’t have an instant pot (yet!) so your review may really help others that want to make it in theirs! 🙂
Kelsey
This will definitely be a new staple at our house! I’ve loved all of your soup recipes, and I love Buffalo chicken, so this was the perfect combo. Such a flavorful, cozy comfort food!
kaylaskitchandfix
That makes me so happy to hear, Kelsey! Combining our two love languages, soup and buffalo 🙂
Claire
Omg this is so delicious! Thank you! Mine came out a little thin so I added some corn starch and it semi worked. Honestly all my soups come out thin. But boy is this tasty 😀
kaylaskitchandfix
Huh, not sure why it was thin for you, that’s interesting! Mine it always on the thicker side! Regardless I am so glad you liked it! 🙂

I love this soup but I’ve made it twice now and every time it comes out watery, is there something I’m doing wrong? Can I reduce an ingredient or add another to circumvent this?
kaylaskitchandfix
Watery?! I have never experienced that! Hm… the only think I can think of is if you’re adding coconut water and not coconut milk? Mine is always so thick! It was so thick last time that I actually added in more broth because I wanted it thinner!
Aimee Wendell
I have this soup on repeat since discovering it last winter. It is the perfect balance of spice, flavor and comfort food. It will fill you up and warm your soul. So, so delicious!
kaylaskitchandfix
Sooooo thrilled you love it and it’s on repeat for you! The ultimate compliment! 🙂
Amy
How do you think cauliflower and/or yellow squash would taste as a substitute for potatoes? Looks so delicious, and I’m making it this weekend!
kaylaskitchandfix
I would go with cauliflower over squash if I had too! I think squash won’t thicken it!
