Healthyish Puppy Chow

Healthyish Puppy Chow

Whether you know it as puppy chow or muddy buddies, you’ll be shocked that this healthyish version using cleaner ingredients tastes as good as the original, if not better. My family is always shocked when I tell them I used alternative ingredients that have no added sugar!

Make it Your Own

If you don’t want to go the low sugar route, feel free to use real powdered sugar and your favorite chocolate! The ratios in the ingredients are still the perfect amount. Plus, you can customize this recipe to be fully vegan by using vegan butter and dairy free chocolate. Finally, add in any special candies or nuts to make this treat satisfy all of your cravings. I love to add chocolate candy and peanuts to mine!

Total Time 10 minutes mins
Servings: 9 cups
Course: Dessert
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 9 cups rice Chex cereal (check for gluten free and vegan compliant, need be)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (I opt for sugar free)
  • ¾ cup unsweetened peanut butter (only ingredient should be peanuts and maybe salt)
  • ¼ cup ghee or vegan butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (I opt for sugar free monk fruit powered sugar alternative)

Method

  1. Melt chocolate, peanut butter and ghee/butter in the microwave or over the stove. I put mine in the microwave for a minute and a half in 30 second increments. Mix until completely combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, measure your Chex. Pour the chocolate mixture over top and gently fold until evenly covered.
  3. Put half of the mix into a large resealable bag and add half of the powdered sugar. Close the bag and shake until the mix is covered. Add the rest of the mix and powdered sugar to the same bag and repeat. You can also do this step in a large bowl.
  4. Lay parchment or wax paper out and pour the puppy chow/muddy buddies onto it. Spread out evenly and let dry.
  5. If you'd like, add in chocolate candies, nuts and/or pretzels for fun add ins or enjoy as is!
