These Gluten & Grain Free Fried Green Tomatoes make for a delicious and unexpected healthy appetizer, side dish or salad/sandwich topping!
Gluten & Grain Free Fried Green Tomatoes
This easy recipe is one that you might not have known you needed. It uses firm green tomatoes that pack a fresh and light taste while giving you a satisfying crunch from the crispy cassava flour coating. Not only are they tasty, but they’re also free from grain, gluten, dairy and added sugars so they fit right into a paleo or Whole30 diet.
How to enjoy them
These crispy yet light and fresh circles are great all on their own, but they’re also fun to eat by dipping in sauce as an appetizer or by adding some flare to your tomato slice on your burger or sandwich. They even make for a fun salad topping!
Special offer for my KK&F fam!
To keep this recipe both grain and gluten free, I use cassava flour. It’s one of my favorite flours to use for breading, but I’ve learned that not all cassava flours are created equal. Some are grainy while others are super high quality. Otto’s Naturals is the only cassava flour I use, and they were nice enough to give me a discount code for you all! Blue Sky Family Farms
I was so happy that I had the opportunity to partner on this recipe with Blue Sky Family Farms free range and pasture raised eggs. What I love about this brand is more than just their high quality pesticide and hormone free eggs, but the fact that they truly care about their chickens as well as the environment. BSFF free range chickens have 10 acres to roam free and their pasture raised chickens have over 50 acres to roam free!
They are American Humane Certified which is the highest standard in eggs and are Non-GMO Verified and USDA Organic Certified (for their organic eggs). You can read more about their chickens by clicking here and find a carton near you on their store locator by clicking here!
Sauces to whip up
I love to serve these crispy bites with different sauces. Some of my favorites are:
You can also make the above sauces using my Paleo Homemade Mayo recipe (click here)! I use BSFF eggs for that recipe as well.

Gluten & Grain Free Fried Green Tomatoes
Ingredients
- 3 firm green tomatoes
- ½ cup avocado oil or olive oil
- 2 eggs
- ¼ cup milk (I use coconut milk)
- ½ cup cassava flour (I use Otto's Naturals)
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- fresh basil, to top (Optional)
- aioli, to serve (Optional)
Instructions
- Wash, dry and slice your tomatoes about ¼ in thick.
- Heat avocado oil or olive oil in a pan on the stove over medium to low heat until warm. You'll want to oil to be warmed up before you start to fry the tomatoes!
- Whisk together egg and coconut milk in one bowl and the cassava flour with the seasonings in another.
- Once the oil is hot, dip each tomato slice in the egg and milk mixture, ensuring to cover each side, then move to the flour mixture.
- After completely coating the tomato entire slice in the flour, add it to the heated pan. It should sizzle!
- Cook each side until browned (about 3-5 minutes) and repeat with all of the tomatoes.
- Serve warm with aioli/sauce for dipping, in your favorite sandwich/burger or over a salad!
