Gluten Free & Dairy Free Funnel Cakes

July 3, 2026 by kaylaskitchandfix Leave a Comment

These Gluten Free & Dairy Free Funnel Cakes are easy to make and quite honestly, the best funnel cakes I’ve ever had! I made this recipe for my Backyard Carnival (read about that here!) and every single one of my guests agreed, gluten free or not! They come together with just a handful of ingredients and bake in avocado oil for just a few minutes to be golden brown. They’re soft, pillowy and the perfect amount a sweet. They’re truly a must make!

What you’ll need:

  • Milk, of choice (I’ve used both full dairy milk and unsweetened almond milk!)
  • Gluten Free All Purpose Flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Flour)
  • Baking Powder
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • pinch salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Egg
  • Powdered Sugar, to dust
  • Avocado Oil, to fry (you’ll need a lot!)

Helpful Notes

  • These can be made either on the stove in a pot with a thermometer or in a deep fryer. Personally I prefer on the stove in a pot because it helps the funnel cake keep a circular shape, but both work great! If you want a deep fryer that works great, I have and love this one!
  • I choose to fry in avocado oil for the neutral taste and high smoke point. Be sure to have enough before frying! No matter the oil, be sure it’s neutral in taste and that you keep track of the temperature!
  • To get the circular shape, pour the batter into squeeze bottles (I use these) and cut the tip a bit shorter. Doing so will alway for a thicker batter stream instead of being too thin!

Total Time 15 minutes mins
Servings: 5 , give or take
Course: Dessert
Ingredients Equipment Method

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (almond milk for dairy free or regular milk otherwise)
  • 1 ¼ cup gluten free all purpose flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch salt
  • 1 egg
  • powdered sugar, to dust
  • avocado oil, to fry (you'll need a bit! be sure to do some math based on your cooking method!)

Equipment

  • Pot or Deep Fryer
  • Slotted Spoon or Strainer
  • Sheet Tray/Pan, lined with towels
  • Thermometer (if making on the stove)
  • Squeeze Bottle(s)

Method

  1. Mix together ingredients until smooth, then pour into squeeze bottles with the tip cut to be shorter for a thicker stream of batter.
  2. In a large pot on the stove or in a deep fryer, heat avocado oil to 350℉.
  3. Squeeze batter into the hot oil for approximately 8 seconds in a circular motion.
  4. Cook for 2 minutes on each side or until golden. You’ll want it to be soft, not crunchy, so don’t wait for the funnel cake to get too firm.
  5. Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined baking sheet to dry/cool slightly.
  6. Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!
