Family Style Chocolate Mousse (Sugar Free & Dairy Free Compliant)

November 9, 2024 by kaylaskitchandfix 4 Comments

This Family Style Chocolate Mousse is my go-to easy dessert that is always a hit. The mousse itself is made from just two ingredients and is topped with a thick layer of easy homemade whipped cream and a generous dusting of cocoa powder. It’s too simple to taste as good as it does, but it’s honestly amazing and takes basically no time at all!

A NOTE ON CALORIE COUNT, NUTRITIONAL INFO AND SERVING SIZES

Due to my past experiences, I do not include most of the above information within my recipes as it is unsafe for me to do so personally. While I try to share a rough estimate when it comes to the serving size, please note that it is very subjective as we all have different hunger levels both from person to person and even from meal to meal.

If any of the above information is important to you, I understand! We are all different and have various goals and needs. If you’d like, you are welcome to calculate the information needed based on the ingredients you use when making one of my recipes.

I hope you understand! This comes from a place of love and protection both for myself and others like me. If you ever have any questions, send me an Instagram message for the quickest response time! Thank you for being here!

Prep Time 10 minutes mins
Chill Time 1 hour hr
Servings: 8 , or so
Course: Dessert
Ingredients Equipment Method Notes

Ingredients

Chocolate Mousse – Regular Version
  • 2 cups heavy cream (I opt for organic and grass fed)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (I have great luck with the Enjoy Life brand)
Whipped Cream (not dairy free/optional)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp sugar or monk fruit
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • cocoa powder (optional, to dust on top)
Chocolate Mousse – Dairy Free Version
  • 2 cups full fat coconut cream (only use the solid part from the can, will likely need two cans)
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

Equipment

  • Mixer

Method

Chocolate Mousse – Regular Version
  1. Combine ½ cup of the heavy cream and all of the chocolate chips and microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between (should take 1 minute total).
  2. Allow the chocolate mixture to cool to room temperature (a few minutes should be fine).
  3. While you wait, beat the remaining 1 ½ cups of heavy cream until a whipped cream has formed, then add in the cooled chocolate mixture and beat again until fully combined.
  4. Spread the mousse into an even layer in a serving dish of choice and refrigerate for 30 minutes or so.
  5. If using, prepare your whipped cream by whipping the heavy cream until fluffy.
  6. Then, add in the sugar or monk fruit and the vanilla and whip until desired consistency (should only take a few seconds as your whipped cream should be formed when whipping the cream alone).
  7. Top the chocolate mousse with an even layer of the whipped cream. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
  8. Dust the top with cocoa powder right before serving and enjoy!
Chocolate Mousse – Dairy Free Version
  1. Refrigerate the cans of coconut cream for 24 hours for best results.
  2. Add only the solidified parts of the coconut cream to a bowl with maple syrup and salt and mix for two minutes.
  3. Fold in the cocoa powder until fully incorporated.
  4. The mousse should be ready to enjoy right away, but keep refrigerated until ready to enjoy!

Notes

Please note that the chocolate you use can change the results of the mousse texture. I have had the best texture results using Enjoy Life chocolate chips!

This is a delicious and SUPER easy dessert to make. I love how there are minimal ingredients and I had everything in my fridge or pantry. I tried the regular version and I could eat half the bowl myself! I will serve the chocolate mousse with fresh raspberries. I didn’t change anything about the original recipe.

*If you are making this for Thanksgiving or another big get together, I would double the recipe.

I made the regular version of this chocolate mousse. It whipped up easily and was a luscious, dreamy dessert. Can definitely overwhip and make the chocolate mousse grainy so would advise starting with a softer whip on the heavy cream prior to adding the chocolate in. Next time I’ll try the recommended brand as well. Even though it wasn’t perfectly silky smooth it was definitely user error and I’ll happily make this in the future.

Great point on the over mixing, Stephani! I have been there as well but I’m glad you enjoyed! 🙂
