What you’ll need:

  • Onion (I always opt for a sweet onion, but yellow or white works too)
  • Gluten Free Flour
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Paprika
  • Salt
  • Baking Powder
  • Egg
  • Water
  • Avocado Oil

Also note, I do find it helpful and important to have a thermometer to measure the temperature of your oil so that you don’t surpass the smoke point and so that your onion rings cook on the inside and outside perfectly.

Prep Time 10 minutes mins

Total Time 20 minutes mins
Servings: 30 onion rings, or so
Course: Appetizer, Side Dish, Snack
Ingredients Equipment Method

Ingredients

Breading
  • 1 cup all purpose gluten free flour (I use Bob's Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Flour)
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • salt, to taste
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup water
Onion Rings
  • 1 sweet onion, large (can also use white or yellow)
  • 1 cup all purpose gluten free flour (I use Bob's Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Flour)
  • avocado oil, for frying

Equipment

  • Thermometer
  • Spider Strainer

Method

  1. Slice your onion into desired sized slices and break apart the rings. This recipe will make approximately 30 onion rings (depending on the size and thickness). Note that you won't want the onion rings to be too think as the onion won't cook inside as well.
  2. Combine all of the breading ingredients in a shallow bowl and mix until fully combined.
  3. Set up the dredging and frying station with the breading mixture and a separate bowl with the remaining 1 cup of flour.
  4. On the stove, bring a pot full of avocado oil (I typically use 1-2 bottles to fry with) to 350℉. I use a thermometer here because it is important the oil is the right temperature for cooking purposes and also so that the oil doesn't surpass the smoke point.
  5. One by one, take each onion ring and coat it in flour, then transfer it to the breading mixture and cover it completely. Gently shake off the excess and transfer it to the oil.
  6. Cook each ring for 3-5 minutes, then transfer to a towel lined baking sheet to dry. Note that the outside should be firm and crispy once finished frying, but be sure not to fry for too long as the onion can burn on the inside.
  7. Repeat the coating and frying process until all of the breading mixture is used.
  8. If needed, you can pop the onion rings in an air fryer to recrisp them right before serving. Enjoy with dipping sauce of choice!
